What’s Next For School Food?

A recent report revealed that childhood obesity has significantly increased globally in recent decades, reinforcing the need for stronger action in schools.

A significant proportion of snacks come from foods high in sugar, fat, and salt, which directly supports the need to reduce items like confectionery, sugary desserts, and soft drinks. Studies have found that eating habits are heavily influenced by environment, meaning schools play a critical role in shaping behaviour.

The most effective change happens when schools are supported, not restricted, combining education, better food options, and practical implementation. It is important for schools to reinforce the importance of structured, balanced school meals, especially now school standards are shifting to less deep-fried food, tighter controls on high sugar items like ice cream and a stronger focus on balanced, nutritious meals.

“We are pleased to see the first update to school food standards in over a decade, and a commitment to monitoring that means these measures will have real impact. Suggested changes will see a shift towards more freshly prepared and delicious meals that are packed full of nutrition. More fruit and veg and fibre will be served so that young people get all the goodness they need to grow up healthy and thrive.” Chefs In Schools

For schools and caterers, the challenge now is creating menus that meet new standards without losing the interest of students. That’s where the real thinking begins – and where Savona can help you to rethink the plate.

The future of school food isn’t just healthier – it needs to be more creative, more engaging, and easier for kitchens to deliver at scale. We’re already working closely with our partners to support this shift from product solutions to menu inspiration, helping make compliance simple and practical.
